The Xfinity Internet plan I have limits downstream data to 150mbps and caps the monthly data at 1.2TB. Upload speed is 35mbps. They apply additional charges if you exceed the monthly data limit, so I utilize a setting on my Linksys EA6350 router to limit my bandwidth. The setting is in the admin menu under Media Priority/Settings/Downstream Bandwidth. I had the setting at 90,000bps which limits the downstream speed to 85mbps. This prevented me from going over the 1.2TB limit with typical Internet usage.
Over the summer, I noticed that I was using a lot less data each month and decided to bump the setting up to 104,400bps. This increased my bandwidth to 98mbps. Of course, this isn’t a concern if you have unlimited data. It only makes sense if you have a plan that limits your monthly data. Xfinity will send you a warning if you are getting close to the limit. But then you typically have to cut back on your internet usage at the end of the month (if you don’t want to exceed the limit). 150mbps is the lowest speed they offer in my area, so I can’t change to a slower internet plan. On June 26, 2025, Comcast (Xfinity) announced that new plans will now start at 300mbps.
Their new plans also include a WiFi gateway and a line of Xfinity Mobile for one year. I have my own router, so I have access to settings that may or may not be found on the equipment that they provide. I initially got my own equipment so that I wouldn’t have to rent equipment from Comcast. When they increased the speed of my plan back in 2024, I wasn’t thrilled because they didn’t change the monthly data cap. Their new plans seem like a good deal, but it also looks like they are really trying to expand their Mobile phone customer base. My US Mobile phone service is $25 per month for two lines. I doubt that Xfinity could match that.
